Setting the Record Straight
For those of you who are interested in my background, I am sharing the following brief overview. For twenty years, I have been employed by one of the most well-respected community management companies in California, Professional Community Management (PCM), and have worked onsite at the largest “55 or better” community, Laguna Woods Village, which was established 50 years ago. During my first ten years with this firm, I served in the finance division, working on all aspects of budget development, long- range planning, and contracts administration.Over the past ten years, I have been responsible for communications and public affairs for the community’s 18,000 older adult residents, as well as for members of the general public seeking information about the community. Also, I act as the community’s liaison to local, state and federal entities. In addition, I am active in various volunteer community leadership capacities for local chambers of commerce and other business associations and have worked to reduce burdensome legislation and overregulation that impact our non-profit organizations, businesses and homeowners.Currently, I serve as chair of the South Orange Regional Chamber of Commerce/Economic Coalition, which has, as its mission to provide a strong voice for business throughout the region. In addition, I am a director for the California Women’s Leadership Association (CWLA), a forum that encourages women to combine their business, community, political involvement, and leadership skills to foster free market principles.

Setting the Record Straight
You may notice, as the election season heats up, that negative print media, mail, blogs and social media efforts ramp up.  Please be wary of negative articles that are opinions versus actual facts, written in a biased, one sided way.  If you have questions always ask the person that is being attacked.  It is very easy to search for a candidate’s website for information and send them a message asking them to clarify, and then share the clarification with people you know.
Please visit my website to find past “Setting the Record Straight” articles in prior e-newsletters.
Thanks for taking the time to read my newsletter!

Setting the Record Straight

During my 20 years as a resident of Mission Viejo, I have volunteered with a number of nonprofit and not-for-profit organizations, including the Nadadores, the Elks, the Rotary, MVHS Grad Night Committee and the Aquatics and Football Boosters, in addition to the Chamber of Commerce and our Church Presbyterian Church of the Master. My reason for doing so was to make this community better for each of us by helping these organizations work better for all of us.

Because public safety is one of my passions, I have been involved in Neighborhood Watch and have helped get the word out to people about Crime Stoppers (Advisory Committee) and Crime Survivors (as a Honorary Advisory Board Member).   My role for both organizations is purely an advisory one. I neither make decisions on behalf of the organization nor direct how its money is spent. I provided the City Clerk copies of an email from the Chief Executive Officer of Crime Stoppers/Crime Survivors confirming that my role is not fiduciary in nature.

As many of you know, I serve on the Mission Viejo Community Services Commission. At the October 15, 2013, meeting of this commission, I chose to abstain when funding for this group was being discussed. As I explained to my colleagues at the time, I did so out of an abundance of caution, not because of any conflict of interest.

Under the circumstances, city staff members advised that there was no need or reason for me to leave either the dais or the room. You can hear the advice I received by listening to the audio of the meeting. This particular discussion takes place about fifty-five minutes into the meeting.

Because some have chosen to misrepresent both the actions that took place at that meeting and the reasons for them, I attended the December City Council meeting to state the facts. I appreciate very much your giving me this opportunity to set the record straight.

Thank you for taking the time to read my monthly e-newsletter and if there is info you are interested in or have a question, feel free to email me!
Have a healthy and happy January!

September Newsletter – Welcome Back to School

Newson September 6th, 2013No Comments
The kids are back in school which means a new year and fresh start for students.  Many of our school teams have been busy getting into shape with various “hell” weeks, complete with the heat and humidity that seems to always come with these particular training camps.  With school back in session, there is more traffic and kids on and around our streets, so please be extra careful as you head out each morning.
Mission Viejo’s character word this month is Responsibility, an appropriate word as many of our kids move into a new grade and take on new challenges.  Click here to see activities and information on this character trait.  On September 15th, be sure to go view the Film of Character, one of my favorites, Sabrina, starring Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, which is a touching romantic comedy with a message about responsibility woven into it.

Election News for South OC
Congressional, State, County, City Council

With the unexpected retirement of Congressman John Campbell, who represents the major portion of Mission Viejo, I thought I would share what is happening for those who may not follow all this closely.  I’m focusing on legislators who do or have represented Mission Viejo.

Congressman Campbell announced his retirement after several years of serving Orange County and most recently, due to redistricting, Mission Viejo.  This led to a kind of domino effect that is rarely seen and impacts Mission Viejo and the South County Region for the 2014 Elections.

Within an hour, State Senator Mimi Walters announced she was running for the Open Congressional seat in 2014. Mimi was planning to run for termed out OC Supervisor Patricia Bates Fifth District seat.  I support Mimi and encourage you all to get involved in her campaign by visiting her websitewww.mimiwalters.com

Supervisor Patricia Bates is running for California State Senate as she desires to go back up to Sacramento to continue to serve South Orange County as a Senator. Many of you may remember she served us previously as an Assemblymember.  Stay tuned for ways to join me in supporting Pat in this effort.

Now that leaves a Fifth District Orange County Supervisor position open and Mission Viejo’s very own Councilman Frank Ury is running for that seat.  This is a great opportunity for Mission Viejo, which is the largest city represented in this district. Join me in supporting Frank by visiting www.Frank4OC.com.

Finally – I will be running for Mission Viejo City Council in 2014 as well.  Watch for a kick-off announcement in the coming weeks!  www.wendybucknum.com

Watch for updates on other races in future editions.

I encourage you to research candidates and make informed voting decisions.

Sparkling Star Punch

1 – 64 oz bottle of cold cranberry juice

1 – 24 oz bottle of cold sparkling cider

1 – litre cold ginger ale

1 – orange, washed

1 – 16 oz bag of frozen strawberries or cranberries (optional)

4 – 5 pieces of star anise (optional)

The Basic Punch: Pour the cranberry juice (reserving 1 1/2 cups), cider, and ginger ale into a punch bowl. Halve the orange, squeezing one half of the juice into the punch. Cut the other half into slices and float them in the punch.

Berry Ice Ring: Arrange the berries in a ring-style gelatin mold or bundt pan that can fit inside your punch bowl. Fill the mold with water, then freeze. Unmold the ring (warm the pan with water) and place it flat side down in the punch.

A Hint of Anise: In a small saucepan, bring the anise and reserved cranberry juice to a simmer, then remove from the heat. Pour into a small bowl and let cool. Refrigerate until cold, then stir into the punch.

 Enjoy!
