July Newsletter – Independence, Symphony, & Kicking it up a Notch

Newson July 6th, 2014No Comments
Mission Viejo is the BEST place to celebrate America’ s Independence at our Annual July 4th Street Faire with amazing fireworks exploding over Lake Mission Viejo to top off the day!  Read on for all the details on activities coming up.
Mission Viejo’s character word for July is Fairness.   How many times have you read something and felt it did not present both sides of an issue?  As we know, in order for news to be fair and balanced, both sides have to be presented.  The movie of character this month, 12 Angry Men, depicts the issue of fairness as it relates to a jury’s duty to arrive at a fair ruling on what appears to be an open and shut case.  It is being screened on July 20 at 2 pm in the Council Chambers.  Click here to see more information on this character trait and read on for activities and events in and around our community

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

Mission Viejo’s Famous July 4th Street Faire

Thousands visit this amazing Street Faire that the Mission Viejo Activities Committee organizes each year!

Our Church, Presbyterian Church of the Master will be doing patriotic face painting, temporary tattoos and handing out cool collapsable water bottles!  Stop by and say hi!  Come early to get a parking spot and look for our volunteers as you enter handing out fans to keep you cool as you walk around and see the sights!

Symphony in the Cities & Prelude in the Park

Commemorate the 30th anniversary of the historic Olympic Bike race during this year’s Symphony in the Cities and Prelude in the Park event July 26 at Oso Viejo Park. The community event will feature the Pacific Symphony Orchestra with Music Director Carl St.Clair’s 25 years with the Symphony.

Top-notch entertainment, activities, food and fun will be available as we celebrate these milestone anniversaries on the Village Green at Oso Viejo park during the Prelude in the Park at 4 p.m. and Pacific Symphony at 7 p.m.

Nonprofit organizations and church groups interested in taking part in the celebration should call 949-470-3014.

Photographs are sought of that historic race that began and ended on Olympiad (formerly O’Neill Road), just outside the entrance to Lake Mission Viejo. The cyclists raced through the streets past Crucero Park, down Marguerite to La Paz and back up Olympiad. The men’s and women’s races took place on July 29, and Mission Viejo residents lined the route and helped staff the event.
High-resolution images of the Olympic Bike Race can be scanned and emailed tocityclerk@cityofmissionviejo.org or delivered by Friday, July 18 to the City Clerk’s office at City Hall, 200 Civic Center.

Setting the Record Straight
For those of you who are interested in my background, I am sharing the following brief overview. For twenty years, I have been employed by one of the most well-respected community management companies in California, Professional Community Management (PCM), and have worked onsite at the largest “55 or better” community, Laguna Woods Village, which was established 50 years ago. During my first ten years with this firm, I served in the finance division, working on all aspects of budget development, long- range planning, and contracts administration.Over the past ten years, I have been responsible for communications and public affairs for the community’s 18,000 older adult residents, as well as for members of the general public seeking information about the community. Also, I act as the community’s liaison to local, state and federal entities. In addition, I am active in various volunteer community leadership capacities for local chambers of commerce and other business associations and have worked to reduce burdensome legislation and overregulation that impact our non-profit organizations, businesses and homeowners.Currently, I serve as chair of the South Orange Regional Chamber of Commerce/Economic Coalition, which has, as its mission to provide a strong voice for business throughout the region. In addition, I am a director for the California Women’s Leadership Association (CWLA), a forum that encourages women to combine their business, community, political involvement, and leadership skills to foster free market principles.

Setting the Record Straight
You may notice, as the election season heats up, that negative print media, mail, blogs and social media efforts ramp up.  Please be wary of negative articles that are opinions versus actual facts, written in a biased, one sided way.  If you have questions always ask the person that is being attacked.  It is very easy to search for a candidate’s website for information and send them a message asking them to clarify, and then share the clarification with people you know.
Please visit my website to find past “Setting the Record Straight” articles in prior e-newsletters.
Thanks for taking the time to read my newsletter!

Setting the Record Straight

During my 20 years as a resident of Mission Viejo, I have volunteered with a number of nonprofit and not-for-profit organizations, including the Nadadores, the Elks, the Rotary, MVHS Grad Night Committee and the Aquatics and Football Boosters, in addition to the Chamber of Commerce and our Church Presbyterian Church of the Master. My reason for doing so was to make this community better for each of us by helping these organizations work better for all of us.

Because public safety is one of my passions, I have been involved in Neighborhood Watch and have helped get the word out to people about Crime Stoppers (Advisory Committee) and Crime Survivors (as a Honorary Advisory Board Member).   My role for both organizations is purely an advisory one. I neither make decisions on behalf of the organization nor direct how its money is spent. I provided the City Clerk copies of an email from the Chief Executive Officer of Crime Stoppers/Crime Survivors confirming that my role is not fiduciary in nature.

As many of you know, I serve on the Mission Viejo Community Services Commission. At the October 15, 2013, meeting of this commission, I chose to abstain when funding for this group was being discussed. As I explained to my colleagues at the time, I did so out of an abundance of caution, not because of any conflict of interest.

Under the circumstances, city staff members advised that there was no need or reason for me to leave either the dais or the room. You can hear the advice I received by listening to the audio of the meeting. This particular discussion takes place about fifty-five minutes into the meeting.

Because some have chosen to misrepresent both the actions that took place at that meeting and the reasons for them, I attended the December City Council meeting to state the facts. I appreciate very much your giving me this opportunity to set the record straight.

Thank you for taking the time to read my monthly e-newsletter and if there is info you are interested in or have a question, feel free to email me!
Have a healthy and happy January!
Kind Regards,
Wendy Bucknum
