Spring is in the air and Mission Viejo is bustling with activity!

Mission Viejo’s character word for April is Service. Service before self comes to mind as I start this newsletter. Click on the word “Service” above to see activities and information on a character trait that is a priority to many of our Mission Viejo residents.

Spring into Action!

Mission Viejo has many activities and opportunities for residents. For many of us, this means more visits to our local parks and sports fields to enjoy baseball, football, lacrosse, softball and soccer as these sports are well underway. I attended several of our little league opening days and watched parents and grandparents volunteer as coaches, umpires, serving at the snack bar or organizing team fundraisers. Many of these families have dedicated years of service to our community youth sports and are modeling volunteerism and service to our youth.Fun MV Fact!

Did you know that our Mission Viejo Nadadore Dive Team and facility have been utilized by the new hit show Splash? Check out the Article and catch the show on ABC on Tuesdays at 8PM!Last month I mentioned that on March 31st, the city celebrated 25 years.

The city and a few key volunteers including former Mayor and current Community Services Commission Chair, Bob Breton have been conducting ongoing interviews with our community and city founders. Click here to find out more about Mission Viejo’s Oral History Project.

The Rotary is one of Mission Viejo’s premier service organizations, which provides scholarships and participates in community events such as the Annual Walk Against Drugs. Consider supporting the Mission Viejo Rotary’s Annual Fundraiser on Saturday, April 6, 2012. Click here for details.

Another one of Mission Viejo’s dedicated services organizations, the Mission Viejo Elks Lodge 2444 is being honored TONIGHT at the Mission Viejo City Council for their donation of the city’s newest police dog, Conan, who will also be in attendance. Please come and thank our Elks for their dedication to so many good activities that benefit our community. Also consider stopping by the Elks for their Bingo fundraisers (every Wednesday), which benefit worthy projects in our community. Click here for more info. 

Consider participating in one of the opportunities to benefit the American Cancer Society via one of Mission Viejo’s Relay for Life events:

-Share your talent at the 4th Annual Mission Viejo’s Got Talent Auditions beginning Friday, April 5th and 12th at 6pm in the City Hall Council Chambers - click here for details. Winners will be performing at the annual Relay for Life.

-The Mission Viejo Activities Committee presents Zumba Extreme Party also to benefit the Relay for Life is held on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month.

-Rally for Life Tennis Tournament being held at the Marguerite Tennis Center on Sunday April 7 beginning at 9am.

In honor of our character word of the month, join me in volunteering time to a community event, program, team or organization.

Ms. Senior California Pageant – Orange County Prelims are being hosted by the City of Mission Viejo and being held on Saturday, April 6 1:30 – 4:00 pm at the Murray Community Center.

Earth Day/Arbor Day Festival & Volunteer Planting at the Oso Viejo Park & Osos Creek Trail on Saturday April 27th from 8 am – Noon. Free Compost will also be available. Visit the City of Mission Viejo Website for more info.

Top of the morning to you! This month I am focusing on “celebration” as we have St. Patrick’s Day and Easter as well as the City of Mission Viejo’s 25th Birthday on March 31st ! Happy Birthday Mission Viejo!

Mission Viejo’s character word is for March is Integrity which is the cornerstone of character. Click on the word “Integrity” above to see activities and information on this important character trait.

Celebrate!

Mission Viejo has so much to celebrate with 25 years of city-hood and 50 years since the inception of our community. The beginning of Mission Viejo’s planning process and the formation of the Mission Viejo Company was actually started 50 years ago in 1963! Watch for news on a birthday celebration planned for later this year.

Did you know Mission Viejo not only the Safest City, but is also the 4th happiest city in the country?? This is according to a study conducted by the University of Vermont. The fact that Mission Viejo is a “happy city” is no surprise for most of you – known for our high quality of life, passionate people, youth athletics, sports fields, parks and picturesque tree-lined neighborhoods. In 2011, 99 percent of Mission Viejo residents rated the quality of life in the City as either “excellent” or “good” and 95 percent of residents essentially said the City is doing a good job providing municipal services, according to a city survey. Welcome to February! This month I am focusing on service, seniors and sweethearts! Mission Viejo is a community of character and our word of the month is Unity. Unity is one of the most important traits for a leader, a business, an organization or a community to be successful.

Senior Activities

There are so many activities going on in February associated with our 55 or better residents, I thought I would focus a bit on what’s happening around us.Free Flu Shots As a public service, the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center will host a flu shot clinic through the Orange County Health Care Agency from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday February 7.

February 10 – Elks Dinner Dance – Dance the afternoon away at the Elks Dinner Dance which takes place from 2pm to 6pm and includes a no-host bar, dinner and prizes sponsored by the local Saddleback Valley/Mission Viejo Elks Lodge #2444. Tickets, which are $7, must be purchased by February 8 at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center. Tickets are also available online at econnect.cityofmissionviejo.org by referencing course #3012. (No tickets available at the door)

February 22 – Supervisor Patricia Bates Senior Summit held at the Laguna Woods Village Clubhouse Three from 8am – 1pm. Click here for details - please RSVP by Feb. 15th.

Mar 2 – Age Well’s Annual Captains Ball gala recognizes companies or individuals who have gone above and beyond in their caring towards seniors. Happy 2013! I thought I would highlight events and activities that serve as great opportunities to make a difference for you as well as your community!

Health & Fitness

Each January our recreation facilities are packed with people with a renewed commitment to health. Our city’s character word of the month is PERSEVERANCE – perfect word to start out your New Year here in Mission Viejo!Join our City’s Recreation & Fitness Centers – a 3 month resident Winter Pass is available currently for only $75!Included in that membership are new Fitness Boot Camps, yoga, RIPPED and Zumba classes!

Drop in on the newly renovated Marguerite Recreation Center and take up some tennis lessons! Click here for all recreation related info including class schedules and details.

There are also several fitness businesses in Mission Viejo that offer great opportunities for enhanced health benefits. Such as 24 Hour Fitness, LA Fitness and Mission Crossfit!

Relay for Life Kick off

Groups, businesses, organizations and individuals interested in forming teams for the 19th annual Mission Viejo Relay For Life are invited to the January 24 Kick-Off at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center. Join the celebration and get inspired by Cancer Survivors. click here for more details

Parent Project

This is a program designed to help children grow into safe and capable adults. The program takes place from January 23 to March 26. For the last several years, the City of Mission Viejo has offered the 10-week program. Developed over a 20-year-period, the curriculum helps parents learn and practice specific prevention and intervention strategies. Parents will learn proven tools and tactics to deal with poor grades, teen social trends, and they’ll learn to understand teens use of technology. Mission Viejo Deputy Sheriff’s, including several of the School Resource Officers, receive 40 hours of training to facilitate the program, which caters to parents with kids in different stages of life. click here for more details

Giving Back

Join one of our service organizations in the city such as Rotary, Kiwanis or the Elks Club! My husband Paul is President-elect of the Mission Viejo Rotary and I am a member of the Mission Viejo Elks Club. These organizations give back to our city and the local communities in many ways! One such event is happeningTHIS Sunday, January 6, as the Elks host a Marathon Bingo session to raise money to purchase another K-9 for the Orange County Sheriffs Department to replace “Kilo” who is retiring after serving Mission Viejo for many years! Come down to play and support this very worth effort! Doors open at 8am, cost is $40, first session begins at 9am with a second session to start at 1:30.

The PJ Ramirez Memorial Golf Tournament takes place on Friday, January 18. It will be held at Casta del Sol Golf course, followed by a luncheon, raffle and silent auction at All Star Pizza located at 22902 Los Alisos. Tickets are $75 for golf and lunch; $25 for lunch only. The cost for the lunch donation for kids 12 and under is $15. The deadline to register for golf is January 7. Sponsorships are also available for this wonderful community event. This time of year Mission Viejo is even more special than usual and actually I take a different route home from work each evening to drive up La Paz just so I can enjoy the lights and the beautifully decorated corners along the way. Mission Viejo is truly a special place that we are proud to call home. Did you know that Mission Viejo has a Christmas Song? This is the 18th Year for the Mount of Olives Drive Through Nativity. This is simply an amazing event held December 7-8 6pm – 10pm at 24772 Chrisanta Drive. Please bring a non-perishable food item to help stock local food pantries.

Christmas Concert

Give Back

Joy Jars - Never Ever Give Up – NEGU – is the motto the City is hoping the community will embrace this holiday season – and well beyond – by donating items that will benefit children battling cancer. Toy collection boxes are located at city facilities for more information click here.

Marine Toy Drive - The Mission Viejo Marines and Sailors Adoption Committee launched its annual Holiday Toy Drive to benefit the children of the Marines and Sailors of Headquarters Battalion at Camp Pendleton. The public can support Mission Viejo’s adopted troops by dropping of an unwrapped toy in specifically marked boxes at City Hall, 200 Civic Center; the library, 100 Civic Center; and the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way. Donations can also be dropped off at the Sierra Recreation and Fitness Center, 26887 Recodo Lane; Montanoso Recreation and Fitness Center, 25800 Montanoso Drive; and the Marguerite Tennis Pavilion at 27474 Casta Del Sol. The Toy Drive runs through December 12.

Greetings!

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the blessings that have been bestowed upon us. I want to take a moment on this Thanksgiving Eve to thank you for your encouragement and support during my race for city council.

I was reminded this morning of the words of President Ronald Reagan in his first Thanksgiving Proclamation:

“America has much for which to be thankful. The unequaled freedom enjoyed by our citizens has provided a harvest of plenty to this Nation throughout its history. In keeping with America’s heritage, one day each year is set aside for giving thank

s to God for all of His blessings. …

“As we celebrate Thanksgiving … we should reflect on the full meaning of this day as we enjoy the fellowship that is so much a part of the holiday festivities. Searching our hearts, we should ask what we can do as individuals to demonstrate our gratitude to God for all He has done. Such reflection can only add to the significance of this precious day of remembrance.

“Let us recommit ourselves to that devotion to God and family that has played such an important role in making this a great Nation, and which will be needed as a source of strength if we are to remain a great people.”

Friends & Family,

While there are still some provisional ballots to be counted, it looks like we’re going to end up a few votes short of our goal of election to the Mission Viejo City Council.

I’d like to thank all the candidates who were willing to step up and serve our great city. Like them, I love Mission Viejo and look forward to continuing my work as a member of the Community Services Commission, Chamber of Commerce and active community volunteer making our city an even better place to live.

We have much work to do to keep our parks and sports facilities up to date and keep our world-class recreational and educational maintained. We must also continue seeking ways to support our local economy by removing unnecessary barriers to business and job growth.

We ran a strong campaign with the help of so many of you — many first-time campaign volunteers! — who spent countless hours at the doorstep, on the phones and at the corners waving signs to show your support. Just as important were the more than 250 friends, neighbors and business owners who generously contributed your financial support to our effort.

I’m honored and humbled by your trust, and proud of the way we all positively communicated with our Mission Viejo neighbors throughout the campaign.

Let’s continue working together for our great city and thank you again for everything these past few months!

Can you believe it? There are just under three weeks left in my campaign for Mission Viejo City Council.

We’re excited about our momentum so far and the tremendous response we’ve received at the doorstep and over the phones. And we were so excited to have earned the endorsement of The Orange County Register as well as the South OC Regional Chamber of Commerce.

But we can’t rest on our laurels. The other side has resorted to dirty tricks and we must keep pushing hard toward the finish line to overcome their underhanded efforts. To do that, I need your help TODAY!

We need to send two more mail pieces in order to communicate our vision for a strong future for Mission Viejo and ensure success on Election Day. You can help make this happen with your immediate contribution of $50, $100, $250, $500 or $1,000, or whatever you can afford.
